SACABAMBASPIS – THE FISH

Sacabambaspis janvieri model was created by Estonian paleontologist dr. Elga Mark-Kurik.
The model is currently on view at LUOMUS – The Finnish Museum of Natural History in Helsinki.
Sacabambaspis is named after the village of Sacabamba in Bolivia, where the first fossils of the genus were found.

About the model creator/author
dr. Elga Mark-Kurik (1926 – 2016), Estonian geologist and paleontologist worked as a researcher at the Academy of Sciences of Estonia and later at the Institute of Geology at Tallinn University of Technology. During her lifetime she published more than 130 scientific articles.
Her research works covered the field of paleoichthyology.
Fundamentally researched crustaceans and turtles, their taxonomy, morphology and biostratigraphy, mainly of the Devonian and Silurian deposits. Her works covered also the history of paleontology and issues of nature conservation.
She was the member of the board and chairman of the Estonian branch of the Paleontological Society, Member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (USA). Corresponding member of the Devonian Subcommittee of the Stratigraphy Commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences.
She was awarded the Karl Ernst von Baer Medal (1992) and Academician Artur Luha award (2002).
